Disability Support

I have several years of experience as a disability support worker and apply my learnings from Trauma Sensitive Yoga to offer tailored, trauma informed disability support. I work in the northern suburbs of Narrm, the CBD, online and offer home visits if appropriate. I am open to providing support in other locations and consider this on a case-by-case basis. I also have access to a small room for hire in Coburg.

What makes me trauma informed?

I have studied trauma theory, attachment theory and neuroscience. I understand what trauma does to the brain and how trauma manifests in the body. I also understand the importance of choice, agency, and non-coercion. Each individual is the expert of their experience and what they need. I am a support, but not there to tell you what to do or how to do it. I understand knowing what you want and making choices is hard sometimes, and I have empathy and patience to support you in these times.

Why trauma informed disability support?

There can be a lot of intersection with trauma and disabilities. For some people being disabled in this society is traumatising and they could use a trauma informed lens applied to the support they receive. The way some people's trauma manifests is disabling. Either way, whether someone identifies as having complex trauma or not, if they are disabled, a trauma informed approach to support work is essential.

Why work with me?

I am reliable, punctual, patient, empathic and committed to disability justice. I acknowledge that having a body that is currently ‘able’ is a privilege. I have supported people with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, PTSD, complex trauma, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, anxiety, neurodivergence and acquired brain injuries.

I understand that some people find diagnoses and labels useful and validating, others face tough barriers when seeking a diagnosis, and some prefer to avoid them entirely. It’s a complex area and everyone has their unique experiences. I strive to understand what that's like for you, what you want and need, and the language that works for you. I also welcome radical honesty when telling me what you want and need. For example, if you don't want to talk, I am comfortable with silence, or if you need me to support you differently, I encourage you to let me know. This could be in person, or via text.

What next?

Please contact me to discuss what you want and need. I am happy to communicate via text, email or a phone call. I also offer a free 30 minute catch up either on video call, phone call or in person to see if it’s the right fit. If you decide to try a support shift with me, I will send you a form to complete which will state our agreed rate per hour, shift times, and will outline what support you want and how I can help. There is no obligation to continue the work if it doesn't feel right. I will check in with you for the first few weeks to ask if you want to continue. After this, you are free to let me know whenever you want to end the relationship for any reason.

I am a settler-coloniser living and working on the land of the Wurundjeri-willam, Woiwurrung people in the Kulin Nation. I pay my respects to their Elders past and present and any Indigenous people visiting this website. Sovereignty has not been ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
